Christmas is a celebration, a time for giving and not simply a day we exchange gifts (isn’t it?) The spirit of Christmas is in the 'togetherness', it's in the thought to which you put into thinking about others, it's a selfless time, where we forgive, take stock of what's important and become 'better' versions of ourselves.
Well I am not entirely sure you get this from the following ads, but some of these will make you laugh the stuffing out of yourself or wonder simply, what were they thinking.
So grab a glass of mulled wine, some candied walnuts or some chippies and kiwi onion dip and sit back and enjoy the ride.
THE BEST OF NZ CATEGORY – TOP 3
New World was a clear winner even making the top 10 international category but the other noteworthy campaigns (see Part One)
Mitre 10 – With you all the way this Christmas
Continuing the journey with a Christmas twist. Just delightful.
Noel Leeming – Merry techmas
On point! Totally relevant.
Spark – Ask S.N.T.A
Nice continuation of last years SNTA innovation
PIPPED AT THE POST CATEGORY
These are all top 15 worthy but just didn’t make the final cut.
Boots (UK)
I’ve seen others have ranked this in their top 10 and wondered if I got it wrong? Life is annoying but the key character puts on her new glasses and everything changes: a normal tree blossoms with fairy lights, her fellow commuters turn into festive party people and the bouncy Hall & Oates soundtrack bursts into life. Love the soundtrack.
Coca-Cola Chile
Delightful, heart-warming, tear worthy.
Bouygues Christmas 2018
This is from 2018 but this is the first time I have ever seen it. Incredible – so I am adding this in because I can.
AN Post - Dublin
Wizard of Oz inspired, this is all about the heart of Christmas, love matters most. Send from the heart this Christmas.
Heathrow airport
On the money!

Finger-linking inspired
Spam – We wish you a figgy Christmas
All I can say is WTF? Did the head of marketing have money that just needed to be spent? Did they eat too much spam? Is someone taking illicit drugs? No words!
BURNED A LOT OF MONEY CATEGORY
Amazon: Joy is Made
What we see throughout the film (and it’s long!), is a young child completely captivated by a snow globe and it goes everywhere with her….to school to the dentist’s office and also to bed. The globe brings comfort and joy and the father beings an inventive plan to bring that magic to life through a globe he makes in the greenhouse in their garden. The ad ends with “Joy is made.” This ad just tries way too hard. I wonder more about what trauma has the girl experienced to be so attached to a snow globe and perhaps she needs some therapy or a dog?
ARGOS UK
I’m a little disappointed as Argos have produced some stunners in the past few years – even winning! Mrs Grinch – blah blah.
Myer AUSTRALIA
This concept had so much potential and then someone snorted some illegal drugs and missed the brief.
RIGHT AMOUNT OF CRAZY CATEGORY
JD SPORTS - UK
This ad is loaded with talent and I hate to think how much it cost to produce. To name a few you have Youtubers Chunks, Tobjizl, KSI, Philly; Premier League Footballers Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Silver, Virgil Van Dijk, Harvey Elliot; even a UK rapper Central Cee and maybe some more I am not sure; then to finish it off you have Sully from Top Boy. Wow. Hits the mark for the audience. Makes me want to find a quiet room to reset.
H&M – Unwrap the magic
Crazy fun and spot on to inspire the target audience for the holiday season
“THE OTHER SUPERMARKETS” CATEGORY All in all these are pretty good. Some just make me darn hungry.
Waitrose (UK) – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
This ad is actually pretty good and would have made a top 10 of supermarket ads if I judge in category. This ad celebrates the care we put in all year round to make Christmas so special. From raising pigs in rainy February to cutting sprouts in the depths of November, our partners, farmers and suppliers work carefully all year to bring you the very best festive food. So that means you can show you care by serving up the most delicious feast for family and friends this Christmas.
Kroger (US) – The Magical Cookbook
This ad also would have made a top 10 of supermarket ads as it has all the core ingredients as well. One taste of a special holiday dish can bring back treasured memories of family celebrations and moments with loved ones throughout the years.
Marks & Spencer Food – Fairy and Duckie
We see Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in the M&S ad. I think it misses the mark, as there might be two comedians here, but there are zero jokes. Boring.
Sainsbury - Once upon a pud
I think this is quite inspired by Bridgeton this just didn’t really appeal to me. And I am not sure “Teenage Dirtbag” as a soundtrack makes any sense at all. Epic production.
Morrisons – Farmer Christmas
It’s okay.
ALL ABOUT THE WORLD CUP CATEGORY
FIFA WORLD CUP
Absolutely nothing to do with retail, but definitely very clever.
SPORTDIRECT
THE EPIC LUXURY STORYTELLER CATEGORY
These are all incredibly good but blimey, how much time, effort and dollars went into them! Incredible storytelling and magical productions. I rarely put into my top 15 as they are so incredibly niche. Perhaps unfair but we make the rules.
GUCCI
Under a starlit sky, the Gucci Gift campaign embarks on a journey toward the festive season and the moments of togetherness it brings. Drawing inspiration from the magic of travel, the focus turns to the wonders that can be found along the journey.
